Wildfire Awareness Month – Hardening Your Home

Wildfire Awareness Month: Hardening Your Home to Withstand Wildfires

May is Wildfire Awareness Month, a crucial time to prepare your home against the increasing threat of wildfires. At Patriot General Engineering’s Fire Crew division, we’re committed to helping communities enhance their resilience. One of the most effective strategies is hardening your home—implementing measures to make structures more resistant to wildfires.

Understanding the Threat

Wildfires can damage homes through:

  • Direct flames: From nearby vegetation or structures.

  • Radiant heat: From burning materials close to your home.

  • Flying embers: Which can travel over a mile ahead of a fire front and ignite homes.

Embers are particularly dangerous, as they can infiltrate homes through vents, eaves, and other openings, igniting flammable materials inside.

Key Home Hardening Measures

  • Roofing: Install Class A fire-rated roofing materials like asphalt shingles, metal, clay, or tile. Regularly clear debris such as leaves and pine needles.

  • Vents: Use ember-resistant vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh to prevent embers from entering attics and crawl spaces.

  • Windows: Replace single-pane windows with dual-pane tempered glass to reduce the chance of breakage from radiant heat.

  • Gutters and Eaves: Keep gutters clean and install metal gutter covers. Enclose eaves to prevent ember intrusion.

  • Siding: Use non-combustible siding materials like stucco, fiber cement, or metal.

  • Decks and Fences: Construct decks with ignition-resistant materials and ensure they are enclosed to prevent debris accumulation. Use non-combustible fencing materials, especially where the fence attaches to the home.

  • Zone 0 – Immediate Zone (0–5 feet around the home): Remove all combustible materials, including mulch, plants, and stored items. Use hardscaping like gravel or stone instead.
